Finally! Consumer Apple IDs Are Back On The Menu

Nov 7, 2024

Great news for businesses: Apple has listened to the feedback and granted companies greater flexibility in controlling Apple IDs on their domains. Starting in 2023 many companies found that Apple had blocked their domain from making consumer level Apple IDs, forcing their end users to use a personal account for their work phone or worse, utilize Managed Apple IDs. For companies that wish their devices to be personally enabled, this has been a frustrating hurdle.  If you had this issue, we have good news–you can now toggle that restriction off!

To adjust this setting:

  1. Go to Apple Business Manager (ABM).
  2. Navigate to Profile > Preferences > Managed Apple Accounts > Manage on your domain.
  3. Make sure “Lock Domain” is turned off.

Apple has reportedly set this option to “off” by default, so if you’ve noticed that Apple IDs are working again, this is likely why. But it’s always a good idea to double-check.

Why This Was Frustrating for Businesses

For organizations that allow employees to personalize their work devices, being forced to use Managed Apple IDs or personal Apple IDs created administrative challenges. Managed Apple IDs have limited functionality, restricting users’ flexibility. And when employees use personal Apple IDs, it can lead to security concerns and confusion over account management. This new setting change gives businesses back the choice, allowing employees to use their devices more freely and eliminating those headaches.
